Breast Surgery
Surgery of the breast is
performed to enhance the size or shape of a women's breast for cosmetic,
medical or reconstructive reasons.
Breast
Augmentation
(Augmentation
Mammaplasty)
Breast augmentation is
a very
popular procedure for women and it is among the most commonly performed
cosmetic surgery procedures. A number of options exist regarding
implant size, shape, and texture, as well as where the incision site
should be placed. Dr Kunkel believes in giving a woman choices. He thoroughly discusses the various styles of implants
and the surgical techniques for placing them. Dr. Kunkel utilizes
an endoscope to place implants through a small incision in the armpit,
or, if the patient desires, an incision just beneath the areola or in
the crease beneath the breast may be used instead. The
saline-filled implants are typically placed behind the pectoralis
muscle, but may also be placed directly beneath the breast tissue.
After surgery the breasts appear more full and shapely in contour.
This is a great procedure for women who have smaller breasts than they
desire, as well as women who lost fullness in their breasts after having
children.

Breast
Lift
(Mastopexy)
Over time, the effects of
gravity along with the loss of the skin's natural elasticity begins to
have an effect on the appearance of a woman's breasts.
These
factors, combined with pregnancies and nursing will often cause the
breasts to lose their youthful shape and firmness.
A breastlift, or mastopexy, is a surgical
procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The procedure can
also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the
nipple). Breast implants inserted in conjunction with a mastopexy
procedure can increase both firmness and size.

Breast
Reduction
(Reduction
Mammaplasty)
Large, pendulous breasts may
cause a woman to potentially experience medical problems
caused by the weight of excess tissue. Problems with back, neck,
shoulder pain as well as skin irritations are common with this condition. Bra straps
often leave indentations in the shoulder. Many women,
especially teenage girls, are very self-conscious if they have unusually
large breasts.
Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) removes fat, glandular tissue,
and excessive skin resulting in smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts that
are better-shaped in proportion to rest of the body.

Reconstruction
Many women require surgical removal of the breast
(mastectomy) for a variety of conditions (cancer, severe fibrocystic
disease). With modern techniques, reconstructing the breast is
often an appealing option. Using either a woman's own tissues or
implants, Dr. Kunkel is able to create a breast that is very natural in
appearance. Breast reconstruction is almost always covered by
insurance and can make an enormous difference is a woman's
self-image. A consultation will provide you with information on
the many options available for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Male Breast
Reduction
(Gynecomastia)
Although rarely discussed, enlarged
male breasts is a common condition. Gynecomastia affects
approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. There is no known cause
for gynecomastia, although there has been some correlation with
various drugs or medical conditions.
Men who feel self-conscious may be helped with breast-reduction surgery.
In this procedure fat and/or glandular tissue is removed, resulting in
a chest that has a more traditional male contour. In a select
few extreme cases excess skin may also be removed.
