Chin Implants

Otoplasty (Ear Pinback)

Otoplasty, or ear pinback surgery, is done to correct prominent, protruding ears. Â This operation sets the ears back closer to the head. It is commonly performed on children and young adults but may also be done on adults. The ears are almost fully grown by age 4, so children as young as ages 4 or 5 can be treated early in life and avoid years of ridicule.

The operation is performed with the patient under general anesthesia and usually takes about two to three hours. An incision is placed on the back of the ear, exposing the cartilage. Â The cartilage is sculpted so that it bends into a new shape. Sutures are also placed internally to maintain the ear in its new position. Sutures are placed to close the incision, and these usually dissolve over a few weeks.

Recovery normally takes one to two weeks. The changes are usually fairly dramatic and be seen immediately, although the final result may not be seen for a few months. Children and adults will want to avoid activities in which the ear may be accidentally bent for 4 to 6 weeks.
