Microneedling is a Great Summertime Skin Treatment

istock 479237900 During the summer months, many people question what they can and cannot do regarding their skin. Laser treatments seem out of the question because they often require weeks of healing during which one must avoid being out in the sun. Now that we are re-emerging from months of back-and-forth lockdowns, we look forward to getting our normal lives back. It’s possible to enjoy a busy, social summer and still take great care of your skin. Microneedling may be the ideal treatment to help you do that.

What is Microneedling?

Tiny needles on a microneedling device create a controlled injury to the skin, creating tiny channels.  The body reacts to this by stimulating collagen production in the skin.  People often misunderstand it because magazines and social media influencers talk about dermal rolling as microneedling. While the basic intent is the same, to create tiny punctures in the skin, the technique of professional microneedling is different from dermal rolling. The latter, performed at home, rolls a needle-clad drum over the skin. The needles might be 1 to 2 mm long. No numbing cream is applied, so the DIY treatment can be pretty uncomfortable. Professional microneedling is different.  The needles of the Rejuvapen may be set to specific lengths, depending on the thickness of the skin in the area being treated. Topical numbing cream is applied before the procedure to make the process more comfortable. During treatment the Rejuvapen needles pass over each treated area three or more times to thoroughly stimulate collagen production in the dermis.  Since the needles may be set to different lengths, delicate areas like around the eyes may be treated, and during the same session thicker areas like the cheeks and even the back may be treated by changing the needle lengths.

What Can Microneedling Do For My Skin?

Rejuvapen microneedling can be performed just about anywhere on the body. Wherever it is performed it can target multiple aspects of the skin simultaneously. For example, if you have rough skin and acne scars, both can improve with this one simple treatment. Microneedling is popular not only for its simplicity but for its ability to achieve improvements such as:

  • Reducing fine lines and superficial wrinkles
  • Improving scars
  • Minimizing stretch marks
  • Smoothing rough texture
  • Brightening and evening-out skin tone

Microneedling is a gentle, effective treatment with few side effects. You may need to avoid sun exposure for a couple of days after your appointment, but wearing a hat and broad-spectrum sunscreen may suffice. Getting microneedling during the summer months can offset the effects of increased sunshine and other environmental factors.
