Who is a Good Candidate for Body Contouring?

If you're in good health and dissatisfied with some aspect of your body, you may be a good candidate for one of the various procedures that are available today. Body contouring can give a more sculpted appearance to the abdomen, thighs, arms, and even the back. To ensure that you can achieve the best outcome, Dr. Kunkel will conduct a thorough review of your medical history and current health. He'll also sit with you to get to know what you wish to achieve and why you want to have surgery to enhance your shape. During your consultation, you'll also learn about each technique that may be ideal for you, how it works, and what the doctor expects in terms of cosmetic outcome. It's important to have realistic expectations in this area, understanding what can and cannot be achieved.

Which Body Contouring Procedure is Right for Me?

Body contouring procedures work in one of two ways; they either debulk an area by removing excess fat or they sculpt an area by trimming excess tissue. If you've lost a fair amount of weight and have been left with loose skin and connective tissue, your true shape may be somewhat obscured. You may still feel like you look heavier than you truly are. In such an instance, Dr. Kunkel may recommend a procedure like belt lipectomy, a lower body lift, thigh lift, or other technique. If you've got some excess fatty tissue that is causing frustrating bulk, he may recommend liposuction. Personalization is one of the most exciting aspects of plastic surgery! When you visit our Fort Worth office, you can expect to discover exactly how a skilled surgeon can correct your specific concerns.

How Can I Prepare for My Procedure?

If you are in good health, your pre-surgical care instructions may be limited to avoiding products that thin your blood. Examples include aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E. If you smoke, you'll need to quit at least 2 months before your surgery date. Otherwise, your surgical risks and post-op risks for complications will be too high to be a good candidate for surgery. Before having a body contouring procedure, it is beneficial to be mindful about your diet. The goal is not to lose weight but to develop the healthy eating and exercise habits that will facilitate optimal healing from your procedure. These habits also help your results last longer.

What is Recovery Like after Body Contouring Surgery?

Your surgical recovery may be different from others' based on the procedure or combination of procedures you have done. Recovery also varies according to the procedure(s) you have done.  For instance, liposuction alone requires some tiny incisions.  People can be fairly active about 3 weeks after liposuction.  A tummy tuck, on the other hand, requires about 6 weeks before getting back to most normal activities.  If you have a tummy tuck, you cannot lie flat or stand completely straight for about 5 or 6 days. Usually, patients are able to return to work within one to two weeks of their body contouring procedure, provided that their job is not strenuous. It can take six to eight weeks to receive full clearance for physical activity. When you consult with Dr. Kunkel about body contouring treatment, you can expect to receive detailed information regarding how much time you should take off work and other activities and what to expect during your recovery.

How Long will My Body Contouring Results Last?

The results of body contouring can last indefinitely. That is, the fat or tissue that has been removed and trimmed will not return. You might prolong your cosmetic improvements by maintaining a stable weight after surgery. Skin care is also vital. Primarily, this involves wearing sunscreen and avoiding too much sun exposure. Tanning damages the DNA in the skin, which can result in accelerated tissue aging that shows up as a loss of tightness and elasticity.
