We’ve heard the lips referred to as “luscious,” “voluptuous,” “sexy,” and more. Lips play a prominent role in the ‘personality’ of a face. Luscious lips aren’t a given, however. Some people are just born with thin, flat lips. Some had fullness and shape at one point but lost it with age. In either case, lip injections may be a wonderful solution. If you’ve been considering lip enhancement with fillers but find that you can’t jump off the fence, maybe what you need is a little more information. We’ll provide that here, and we also invite you to contact our Fort Worth office directly if you have more questions.
How Lip Fillers Work
The soft tissue fillers commonly used for lip augmentation are composed of hyaluronic acid. This naturally-occurring polysaccharide is already present in the skin, joints, and even the eyes, so the body does not treat it as a foreign substance. It does not create allergic reactions the way that older filler materials did. Hyaluronic acid’s function is to bind to water molecules. Water, then, serves as a buffer, a lubricant, or, in the case of the skin, a volumizer. Injections of hyaluronic acid dermal filler brings water, and thus volume, into a targeted area, to build shape and that lusciousness that our patients seek.
What do I need to know before getting lip fillers?
One of the first things that patients want to know about lip injections, and what keeps many on the fence, is whether or not treatments hurt. Our expert nurse injector is so skilled at performing this treatment that she has patients visit from all across Texas and even from other states. Why? Because she achieves outstanding results with the least amount of discomfort. Patients can choose to have a topical numbing cream applied before they receive treatment, or they may receive a regional nerve block to build even more comfort. Ultimately, we cater to each patient’s preferences.
What patients may overlook but need to know about lip injections is that, while considered a conservative treatment, they are not without risk. Who performs your lip augmentation treatment matters. It’s not only your cosmetic outcome that is at risk but the general condition of your lips and possibly even your health. Krista, our aesthetics nurse injector is well-trained, a registered nurse (RN), and experienced. She is familiar with the anatomy of the lips so has the awareness to avoid blood vessels and other vital structures, thereby reducing the risks associated with treatment.
