Fort Worth, long thought of as ‘Cowtown’, actually has a deep artistic culture. Over the last few years, this artistry has been show-cased on public buildings as murals. The mural scene has exploded! I explore Fort Worth looking for and photographing murals. We have collages of these murals in my Fort Worth office. Our clients are always commenting on them. Since there are so many amazing murals out there, it would be overwhelming to show all of them at once. Instead, I’m going to create posts that reveal murals from particular areas around town. Since my plastic surgery office is located near the ‘hip’ Magnolia Avenue area, that seemed like a good place to start.
The photos were all taken by me using my cell phone camera. Like pretty much any amateur photographer, I’ve cropped the photographs to focus on the murals themselves. In a few instances I have Photoshopped small areas, removing weeds that had grown over the lowest parts of the murals, for instance. The murals are such wonderful works of art. I didn’t want to detract from the artistry by “getting lost in the weeds”.
Mag & May apartments
Perhaps no place reflects the mural scene better than the Mag & May apartment complex at 315 W. Magnolia. The building has a 5 story mural, shown here:
The apartment complex also held a contest among Fort Worth muralists. There are multiple concrete slabs along the sidewalk surrounding the building. The artists painted murals on these, and some of the murals are shown below. The winning mural is shown first.
Fort Worth Frida Kahlo mural
Here’s one of the larger murals along Magnolia. It’s by Juan Velazquez. This beautiful piece of art is on the side of Islas Tropicales at the corner of Magnolia and 7th Avenue.
As a plastic surgeon I have long appreciated form, structure, and color. This mural is fantastic!
Paris Coffee Shop Fort Worth murals
The iconic Paris Coffee Shop, at the corner of Magnolia and Hemphill, has several murals. These are in the parking lot on the Hemphill side.  Renovations are underway at Paris Coffee Shop. It will be interesting to see if these murals survive the renovation. Go admire them before it’s too late!
Other Magnolia Avenue murals
As you stroll down Magnolia, it’s easy to walk right past these murals. If you see one, take a minute and admire the artistry behind it. Think about why the artist chose the topic, design, and colors.
Murals Near Magnolia
Drive to the intersection of Magnolia and Hemphill and head south. You’ll find these murals:
And if you happen to be driving on Hemphill looking for those murals, take a look at these under a railroad crossing near the Hemphill/Berry Street area:
And, if you’ve driven this far, here’s one that’s not too much further south:
A couple blocks south of Magnolia you’ll find these gems on Allen Avenue:
Over at Cook Children’s Fort Worth Medical Center you’ll find this mural, painted by a senior in high school:
8th Avenue Fort Worth murals
Here are a couple bonus murals. These are on the buildings next door to my plastic surgery office at 1830 8th Avenue. We are just a couple blocks south of the Magnolia/8th Avenue intersection.
