Breast Augmentation Recovery: What to Expect

breast augmentation (5)If you’re interested in breast augmentation surgery, it’s important to know what to expect from the recovery process. Dr. Kelly R. Kunkel is proud to provide the Fort Worth area with compassionate, safe, research-based care. Here, we’ll take a look at what you can expect from the breast augmentation recovery process.

Immediately After Breast Augmentation Surgery

When your surgeon finishes your procedure, you’ll be moved to a post-operative recovery area. You’ll likely experience some sleepiness as the anesthesia begins to wear off. You’ll probably have some surgical dressings, and might be placed in a surgical bra.  Your breasts will likely feel tight.  Some discomfort is common, but most women are surprised that they do not have a lot of pain.

The First Few Days After Surgery

During recovery from breast augmentation, it’s likely that you’ll notice swelling and a little bruising.  Cold compresses may be recommended to help reduce swelling.  Many surgeons recommend ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help minimize swelling.  Keeping swelling down also reduces your discomfort, so stronger pain medications may not be required.  Your surgeon will likely also ask you to come in for a post-operative appointment a few days after your procedure so they can check on your healing process.

Returning to Normal Activities

Your surgeon will talk with you about when you can return to normal activities, including exercise. Most people are able to return to their normal daily routines within a week or so after breast augmentation surgery.  Strenuous activities, like running, working out, and playing tennis are discouraged for about six weeks.  The incision sites take about six weeks or so to become strong.

An Important Note

If you notice anything that seems out of the norm or you experience pain beyond what’s typical with recovery, it’s important to reach out to your surgeon right away (and seek emergency care if necessary).
