When considering breast augmentation, you have two main options: saline and silicone implants.Â
Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. They’re often chosen for their safety, as the body can absorb the saline harmlessly in case of a leak. On the other hand, silicone breast implants are filled with a silicone gel that mimics the feel of natural breast tissue, making them a popular choice for their realistic texture.
Each type of implant suits different needs and preferences. Younger women often opt for saline implants.  They are less expensive, and there are FDA regulations requiring women to be at least 22 years old to be eligible for silicone implants. Women seeking a more natural feel might lean towards silicone.Â
Pros and Cons of Each Type
Saline implants are adjustable during surgery. This is a great option when a women notices that one breast is larger than the other. This gives Dr. Kunkel the option to fill one implant with more saline than the other, allowing for a little better ‘fine tuning’ of the end result.  Additionally, saline breast implants typically require smaller incisions, which can lead to less noticeable scarring. However, saline implants tend to have more noticeable ripples or folds, which can be noticeable.
Silicone implants, praised for their natural feel, tend to feel more like real breast tissue than saline implants, and tend to have less noticeable rippling. However, one thing to consider is that the FDA requests women who have silicone implants to undergo periodic radiographic scans to make sure the implants have not leaked. When a saline breast implant leaks, it is obvious. The breast with the leaking implant deflates. That’s not the case with silicone implants. If one leaks, you might not notice any change. That’s the reason the FDA wants women to have either an ultrasound or an MRI after 5 or 6 years if they have silicone breast implants.Â
Making the Right Choice for You
Choosing between saline and silicone breast implants is a personal decision that depends on your health, body type, and aesthetic goals. Consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon is crucial. They can provide tailored advice based on your unique circumstances.
It’s important to reflect on why you’re considering breast augmentation. Whether you value silicone’s natural feel or saline’s safety and adjustability, your choice should align with your lifestyle and personal desires.Â
This decision impacts your body and confidence, so take the time to make an informed choice that feels right for you.
