What Happens as Juvéderm Gradually Wears Off?

Woman gets Juvederm injection to restore volume to her aging face. If you love the idea of facial rejuvenation but aren’t ready for a permanent change, Juvéderm offers an appealing advantage: its results gradually fade over time. But what does that actually look like? Will your face suddenly return to its pretreatment appearance?

At Kunkel Plastic Surgery in Fort Worth, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kelly Kunkel and our medical aesthetic nurses use Juvéderm to create natural-looking enhancements and help you understand what to expect throughout the life of your results.

Why Juvéderm Results Are Temporary

Juvéderm is made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally found in your body that helps attract and retain moisture. When injected strategically, Juvéderm can restore volume, soften facial folds, enhance the lips, and improve facial contours.

Over time, your body naturally breaks down and absorbs the hyaluronic acid. This happens gradually rather than all at once, so you shouldn’t wake up one morning to discover that your filler has suddenly disappeared.

How quickly this happens varies. Your metabolism, the amount and type of filler used, and the treatment area can all influence longevity. Areas with frequent movement, such as the lips, may require maintenance sooner than other areas.

Will You Look Worse When Filler Wears Off?

This is a common concern, but allowing Juvéderm to wear off doesn’t typically make you look worse than you did before treatment. Instead, the added volume slowly diminishes, and your features gradually move toward their pre-treatment appearance.

Of course, natural aging continues during this time. Your skin, facial fat, and underlying tissues will continue changing whether or not you use filler. This can sometimes make your appearance seem different from what you remember before treatment.

Do You Have to Keep Getting Juvéderm?

No. Choosing Juvéderm doesn’t commit you to ongoing injections. If you enjoy your results, you can schedule maintenance treatments to help preserve them. If your goals change, you can simply allow the filler to gradually wear off.

Our team can also adjust future treatments as your face changes. Instead of automatically repeating the same amount in the same locations, we evaluate your current anatomy and goals to maintain balanced, natural-looking results.
